Tips for Getting a (Healthier) Caffeine Fix

We love coffee. Well, most of us do and for those who love it, we really love it! Most often in the morning, usually in the afternoon, and even sometimes in the evening. However, between mountains of whipped cream and caramel drizzles, it can be hard to stay away from too much sugar at coffee shops. But balance can be found at our favorite coffee chain or local beanery. Here’s a few tips on how to order healthy coffee shop drinks:

Choose a Smaller Size
It’s common sense, but worth reviewing — the larger your drink, the more sugar you consume. It’s always okay to treat yourself, but treat yourself in moderation. One of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to do that is to opt for a smaller size.

Skip the Extras
Sweeter coffee selections often include whipped cream, sprinkles, drizzles, syrups, or additional toppings. Caramel drizzle, for example, adds 4 grams of sugar to your drink! Skip them…or at least ask for less than what is normally added.

Ask for Less Syrup
Flavored syrup sends already sweet coffee drinks over the edge in sugar content. Did you know that one pump of flavored syrup contains 5 grams of sugar? That puts small drinks at 15 grams of sugar, medium drinks at 20 grams of sugar, and large drinks at 25 grams of sugar – a whopping 100% of the recommended daily sugar intake for women. Shrink your sugar intake and ask for:

  • 1 pump of syrup in a small drink – cuts sugar from 15 to 5 grams
  • 2 Pumps of syrup in a medium drink – cuts sugar from 20 to 10 grams
  • 3 Pumps of syrup in a large drink — cuts sugar from 25 to 15 grams
